Routine three-year smears are done by the Practice Nurse. We recommend the patient rings for a convenient appointment.
Child Immunisations
We recommend the full programme of vaccinations for 0-5 year olds, which will normally be given at Baby Clinic (see above). If you have concerns about any vaccination, feel free to consult the health visitors, doctors or nurses.
Contraception
We are able to provide a wide range of contraception within the surgery. Our Doctors can advise you during routine appointments on all aspects of contraception, pills (including emergency contraception), diaphragms, IUD's, and sterilisation. Dr Davies holds specialist qualifications in family planning that enable her to fit intrauterine devices (coils). This confidential service is available to patients of any age who require advice.
Diabetes
All diabetic patients have a comprehensive annual check up which includes testing blood, urine and a physical examination. Screening for possible eye problems linked with diabetes is undertaken by the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service, all patients are referred for this along with dietician advice if required and chiropody service if needed. For urgent diabetic advice please see the Doctor.
Emergency Contraception
A reliable hormonal method is available for emergency contraception. It is effective if it is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It is important to remember that the earlier it is taken the less chance there is of pregnancy (if possible in first 72 hours after sex). An alternative method is a copper IUD or coil. This can be fitted up to five days after unprotected sex. Advice or prescription for emergency contraception is available during surgery hours. Confidentiality is assured at all times. Follow-up is also advised to discuss further contraception. Alternatively, you can purchase the Morning After Pill at a local Pharmacy, or contact the A & E Department at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
Joint Injections
Some arthritic joint conditions, as well as many chronic inflammatory conditions such as "tennis elbow" may benefit from steroid injection. These can often be undertaken at the surgery; Please see the doctors for further advice.
Minor Surgery
The Doctors are approved for minor surgery. During minor surgery appointments, the doctors can remove warts, verrucae, some moles, skin tags and cysts using simple surgical techniques. Clinics are arranged at intervals during the year and appointments are booked after discussion with the Doctors.
Other Clinics
The Practice Nurse may also give you advice on the following:-
- Stop Smoking
- Weight Loss

Please note that some vaccinations are not available at this surgery and you may have to attend a separate Travel Clinic but you will be advised of this at your travel consultation.
Occupational Vaccinations
Occupational vaccinations, normally chicken pox and hepatitis B, fall outside the NHS and therefore a fee is payable normally, by the employer. However, if the employer refuses to pay for the course of vaccines, then as this is outside the NHS, the GP has the right not to administer the vaccine.
Well Man Assessment
We encourage all our male patients to attend for an annual blood pressure check, particularly if you have a family history of high blood pressure or heart disease, or you are over 40 years of age. A check for high cholesterol, prostate problems, liver and kidney disorders may be included if appropriate.
